What are the best sounds for focusing and studying?

The best sounds for focusing and studying are steady, wordless and low in variation, such as running water, rain and soft forest ambience, played quietly enough that you stop noticing them.

Lyrics compete with reading and writing, because your brain tries to follow the words. Sounds without words or melody give a constant background that covers office chatter or street noise without asking for attention. Water is the safest choice: a river or stream is broadband and very even.

Birdsong can be pleasant for routine tasks, but sudden calls can pull attention, so test it. Some people with ADHD say a steady background helps and others find any sound distracting, so there is no rule that works for everyone. Try 20 minutes of each sound and keep the one you forget about.

Brown noise is a deep artificial hiss that many people like for focus. Real rivers and streams are steady and broadband in a similar way, but with natural variation; we do not produce brown noise ourselves. Keep the volume just below conversation level. Below are three of our recordings made for long sessions.

Quick questions

Are nature sounds better than music for studying?

For reading and writing, usually yes, because there are no words to follow. For routine tasks, music you know well can work too.

How long can I play it?

As long as you like. Use a long continuous recording so there is no jump at a loop point.
