What does rain on a tin roof sound like?

Rain on a tin roof sounds like a dense, even drumming of thousands of drops on metal, warmer and louder than rain on leaves, and it covers small noises very well.

Metal sheets ring a little with each drop, so light rain gives a soft patter and heavy rain a full, steady roar. Because the drops fall at random, the sound is even overall but never repeats, which is why many people find it easy to fall asleep to.

Our tin roof recordings were made at night inside an old tin garage in the meadows. Two microphones ran at the same time: one for the roof, one aimed at the spot where water runs off onto the ground. Under the rain you can hear crickets from the meadow.

If you want the steadiest version, choose a long black screen recording and a low volume. Three of ours are below.

Quick questions

Why is rain on a tin roof relaxing?
