What do campfire sounds sound like?

A campfire sounds like a steady crackle with irregular pops of burning wood, under a soft hiss, and because it burns outdoors you also hear the place around it: water, wind, insects or night birds.

The crackle comes from moisture and resin in the wood turning to steam and gas and bursting out. Dry, thin wood crackles fast and bright; thicker logs pop less often but louder. When the fire settles into embers, the sound gets quieter and more even.

The big difference from a fireplace is the space. Indoors, walls and the chimney give a warm, close sound. Outdoors the fire sounds more open, and the background is part of it. Our lakeside fires have water and summer insects behind them.

For sleep, choose a fire that someone kept feeding, so the crackle does not die out halfway through the night. Our campfire recordings are below.

Quick questions

Is campfire sound good for sleep?

Many people sleep well to it. Pick a long recording with a steady crackle and keep the volume low.

Campfire or fireplace sounds?

Campfire is more open, with the outdoors behind it; a fireplace is closer and warmer. Try both and keep the one you stop noticing.
