What does distant thunder sound like?

Distant thunder sounds like a low, rolling rumble that builds and fades over several seconds, without the sharp crack you hear when lightning strikes close by.

Distant Thunder for Sleep | Summer Storm in the Tatra Mountains

Thunder is the sound of air expanding around a lightning bolt. Close up it is a sudden, loud crack. From far away the high frequencies fade, and the sound bounces off hills and clouds, so it arrives as a long, soft roll that seems to move along the horizon.

That is why distant thunder suits sleep better than a nearby storm: it is deep and slow, and the gaps between rolls are calm. Our storm recordings come from the mountains. In the Slovak Tatras we lay on a blanket on a dry meadow while thunder moved across the range above, with crickets below. In the Polish mountains rain fell on an open field at night while the thunder stayed far off on the ridges.

If sudden noise wakes you easily, start with the recordings without rain and keep the volume low. Three of ours are below.

Quick questions

Is thunder good for sleep?

Distant thunder can be, because it is low and slow. Close, sharp thunder may wake light sleepers.

Rain and thunder or thunder only?

Rain adds a steady base that fills the gaps; thunder only is calmer between rolls. Try both.
