Why do some people sleep better to snoring sounds?

Some people sleep better to snoring because it is a slow, steady, human rhythm that reminds them of not being alone, for example after years of sharing a bed or travelling with someone.

Snoring is close to slow breathing: a regular in-and-out with a pause, roughly every few seconds. For people who are used to it, silence can feel strange, and the familiar rhythm helps them settle. For others it is the reason they cannot sleep, so this is a very personal choice.

Our snoring recording is a real summer night in a parked campervan. A Zoom F3 and a RØDE NT1 stood in the middle of the van, so the snoring is loud and close. In the gaps between breaths you can hear the compressor fridge and a small fan, and now and then the bedding shifting when someone turns over.

If you try it, keep the volume low and use a long recording, so the rhythm does not stop halfway through the night.
