What does a blackbird sound like?

The common blackbird sings slow, mellow, flute-like phrases with pauses between them, usually from a treetop or rooftop at dusk and dawn, and gives a loud, rattling 'chink-chink' alarm.

The Eurasian blackbird (Turdus merula) is one of the best songbirds to learn first. Each phrase is different, low and relaxed, often ending in a softer twitter. The pauses between phrases make the song easy to follow.

Blackbirds start singing in late winter and keep going into early summer. The alarm call is very different from the song: a loud, hurried chatter when a cat or owl is near, often at dusk.

Two of our recordings have the blackbird marked in their chapters. The timestamps below jump straight to it.
