What does a crane sound like?

The common crane makes a loud, rolling, trumpet-like 'krroo-krroo' that can be heard several kilometres away, often given by a pair calling together.

Cranes (Grus grus) have a very long windpipe coiled inside the breastbone, which works like a brass instrument and gives the call its depth and reach. Pairs perform a duet: the two birds call in a fixed rhythm, and you hear it as one long, overlapping bugle.

In Poland cranes breed in wet forests, bogs and marshes. In spring the duets are most frequent, and in autumn large flocks call as they gather before migration. The sound is unmistakable once you have heard it.

Our 12-hour black screen recording from a summer forest has a crane marked in its chapters. The timestamp below jumps to it.
