What do fireplace sounds sound like?

A fireplace sounds like a close, warm crackle of burning wood with a soft roar of air drawn up the chimney, quieter and more even than an outdoor fire.

Inside a hearth the walls hold the sound in. You hear the wood clearly, with small pops and the hiss of escaping gas, and under it a low, steady rush of the draught pulling air up the chimney. There is no wind or water behind it, so the fire is the whole sound.

Our fireplace recordings were made in the old hearth of a remote house on summer nights. Someone lit the fire in the evening and added wood, and the recorder ran through the night with nothing else going on in the room.

If you want the warmest, most even fire sound for sleep, an indoor hearth is usually the better choice; if you like hearing the outdoors, try a campfire. Our two hearth recordings are below.

Is a fireplace sound the same as white noise?

No. The draught gives a steady base, but the crackle is irregular.
