What does a woodlark sound like?

The woodlark sings soft, liquid phrases that fall in pitch, like 'lu-lu-lu-lu', often while circling high in the air and sometimes at night.

The woodlark (Lullula arborea) is a small brown lark of sandy pine woods, clearings and heaths. Its song is gentle and a little sad, built from repeated syllables that speed up or slow down and drop in pitch. The Latin name Lullula comes from that sound.

Woodlarks often sing in a slow circling song flight, and they are one of the few European songbirds that also sing in the dark, so they can appear in overnight forest recordings.

Two of our recordings have the woodlark marked in their chapters. The timestamps below jump straight to it.
